The bottom of page 151 reads:
:null => true
Makes the column required at the database level by adding a not null.
I think that should be :null => false

I found a link to this bug tracking site from Josh Susser's review of the book, so I wanted to let you know about this typo.
Also, great job on the book! I'm really enjoying your writing style so far.
