Typos needing correction (from Jochem)

Reported by Obie | January 18th, 2011 @ 12:28 PM | in Next Printing

Dear Obie,

With much anticipation I awaited the pre-ordered The Rails 3 Way book,
which was delivered just before New Year's Eve. I've read most of the
sections by now, enjoying the topics discussed, clear explanations,
and insightful comments. Many compliments on this book and effort!

I've got a first printing edition, dated December 2010, and I found
quite a number of typos / minor errors that I want to share with you.
Most likely, it could make a next printing even better. I hope that
you appreciate it that I share these with you.

p. 383, at 80% on the page, some markup codes instead of markup. Look
for ",Äú" and ",Äù".

p. 403, at 30% on the page, markup codes

p. 375, at 50% on the page: for ":en-UK, you would have" lists $
(Dollar) instead of £ (Pound).

p. 399, at 90% lists a wrong footnote for the attachment_fu plugin? It
mentions a WillPaginate plugin.

p. 414, at 90% mentions "respond_to" in the code, whereas p. 415 at
30% mentions that that construct is gone.

p. 526, at 100% mentions "rails" instead of "Rails".

p. 651, at 50% mentions "exabytes2" instead of "exabytes".

p. 132/133 mentions Arel, which isn't really explained at that time. I
tried to look for it, but "Arel" also isn't included in the index, and
only gets a first explanation on p. 152.

p. 137, at 30% wrong indentation for "if project.valid?"

p. 147, at 20% is missing hash brackets { and }? It is mentioned that
Product#where is supplied a hash as second parameters, but instead it
receives three additional parameters.

p. 164, at 10% an additional "1" behind "keystroke." at the end of the
paragraph, or a missing footnote?

p. 176, at 80% and 90% is missing code examples

p. 235, at 15% wrong identation for "validates_format_of"

p. 416, 417 and 418 reference sections "Drag & Drop" and "Sortable"
which I could not find in the book. (But I could have missed it.)

p. 443, at 5% what is that "weon!"?

p. 455, at 50% and 80%, wrong indentation in the respond_to blocks,
and also a missing block end.

Generally speaking, the index misses quite a number of lemmas that I
would have expected to find when I was trying to find further
information. It would be my suggestion to be a little less exclusive
in selecting keywords for the index. Also, quite a number of page
references in the index are 1 or 2 pages off. A regeneration of the
index hopefully solves this.

Finally, nevertheless the remarks above, please be assured that I
enjoyed the book. Actually, that is the reason that I'm reporting
these comments to you, so that hopefully you and all future book
buyers can enjoy an improved printing.

Sincere regards,

Jochem Schulenklopper
